Midway Carousel

- A classic ride for people of all ages -

History

One of only a handful of Daniel Muller carousels left in operation, and the oldest operating ride at the park, the Midway Carousel is a classic ride for people of all ages, and a historic staple attraction for Cedar Point. Located directly past the main gates, it has been enchanting Cedar Point guests since 1946. Who would have predicted when it was built in 1912, that it would still be operating nearly a century later?

It was originally carved for John Hurley and operated as Hurley's Hurdlers in Revere Beach, MA. From there it moved to Nantasket Beach, MA, before relocating to its current home at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH. It was bought and operated by the Holzapfel family from 1946 until 1963 when it was sold to the park.

Ride Specs

The carousel is a classic all wood design and features 60 horses and 4 chariots. Due to maintenance and financial problems during restoration in the mid 1970's, the 5th row of stationary figures were removed, and the 4th row of horses were made stationary. The carousel is known as a Pit-Machine, operates on a 57-foot turntable and plays its music from a Wurlitzer #153 band organ.

Current Operation                                                                                                                           In 1994 the carousel was given a $250,000 make-over, a new building and was moved to its current location on the Main Midway. In 2010, all the horses and chariots were stripped and re-painted to give the ride a sleek new look. Riders must be at least 46" tall or accompanied by a responsible person to ride. The total ride time is approximately 1 minute.
